Interactive Representations of Information and Knowledge

Lesson 04 Reflection

What I have learnt in this lesson!

Learning with Representations (Mayer,2005)

  • Multimedia learning hypothesis: “People can learn more deeply from words and pictures than from words alone”.
  • Learning as a process by which people build mental representations from words and pictures (Mayer’s cognitive theory of multimedia learning and Paivio’s dual-code theory)
  • Multimedia for learning should be designed in light of how the human mind works
  • Learners mentally integrate pictures and text into single internal representations.
  • People do not necessary learn better from animation than from static visuals.
